Our “Food as Medicine” initiative is designed to educate schools, hospitals, teaching kitchens, lifestyle medicine programs and insurance providers about the benefits of incorporating canned fruits and tomatoes into daily nutrition.

This program aims to provide essential resources and support to promote healthier eating habits, especially in communities with limited access to fresh produce.

We will provide comprehensive toolkits containing educational information, materials, and resources tailored to both students and staff. These toolkits will include:

  • Nutritional guides explaining the benefits of canned fruits and tomatoes.
  • Lesson plans and activities designed to engage students in learning about healthy eating.
  • Posters, brochures, and other visual aids to display around the school or hospital.

We will work closely with each school and hospital to create custom content, including:

  • Informative videos showcasing the nutritional benefits of canned foods.
  • Recipe development and cooking demonstrations to inspire practical use in daily meals.
  • Discussions and workshops led by nutrition experts to provide deeper insights into the “Food as Medicine” approach.

In return, we seek the support of participating schools and hospitals to actively teach students, staff, and patients about the benefits of canned fruits and tomatoes.

This includes demonstrating how they can be used as part of a balanced diet to provide essential vitamins and nutrients, especially in food deserts and during winter months when fresh produce may not be available.

By educating communities on the value of canned fruits and tomatoes, we help promote healthier eating habits that can lead to longer, healthier lives.

Highlighting the benefits of canned foods, especially in areas where fresh produce is scarce, ensures that everyone has access to nutritious options year-round.

This program aligns with public health goals by encouraging a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, which is vital for preventing chronic diseases and maintaining overall well-being.

Funding for this Project was made possible by a grant/cooperative agreement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Marketing
